Oakland’s First-Half Spark Fades as Monterey Bay Steals a Point at the Coliseum

OAKLAND, Calif. — For 45 minutes, it looked as though Oakland Roots had finally found the performance they had been searching for.

Under the lights of the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday night, Roots played with urgency, pressed Monterey Bay FC into uncomfortable positions and generated chance after chance in the latest chapter of their Northern California rivalry.

By the final whistle, however, a promising night had turned into another frustrating one.

Oakland and Monterey Bay settled for a 1–1 draw, with the visitors recovering from a difficult opening half to deny Roots three points at home.

Oakland established control almost immediately.

Bruno Lapa sent a dangerous ball across goal inside the opening minutes, while Bertin Jacquesson tested Monterey Bay goalkeeper Fernando Delgado shortly afterward. Jesús De Vicente forced another save, and Oakland continued to pin the visitors back with sustained pressure.

One of the clearest warnings arrived in the 23rd minute, when Lapa struck the crossbar. By halftime, Oakland had produced 11 shots, five on target and six corners, while Monterey Bay had managed only two attempts and none on target.

The breakthrough finally arrived just before the interval.

A Lapa delivery from a corner caused chaos inside the penalty area. Delgado was unable to cleanly deal with the ball, and it dropped for Jacquesson, who reacted quickly and sent a bouncing effort into the net in the 45th minute.

For Oakland, it was more than an opening goal.

It ended a 383-minute stretch without scoring, giving the Coliseum a release that had been building throughout the first half.

At halftime, Oakland had the goal, the momentum and nearly all of the dangerous chances.

Then the match changed.

Monterey Bay emerged from the break with considerably more purpose. The visitors began finding space, forcing Oakland goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh into saves and gradually pushing Roots deeper into their own half.

The contrast between the two halves was striking. Monterey Bay produced seven second-half shots, four on target, while Oakland managed only two attempts after the break and failed to put either on frame.

The pressure finally produced an equalizer in the 77th minute.

Stuart Ritchie drove a low ball into the area, where Oakland defender Michael Edwards attempted to intervene. The ball eventually fell into the path of Monterey Bay attacker Ilijah Paul, whose effort made its way through the crowded penalty area and into the net to level the match.

Suddenly, the team that had spent much of the first half defending was pushing for all three points.

Monterey Bay thought it had completed the turnaround late in regulation, only for an 87th-minute goal to be ruled out for offside. McIntosh then produced an important stop near the end of the 90 minutes to preserve the draw for Oakland.

When the final whistle arrived, neither side had found the decisive moment.

The 1–1 result extended Oakland’s league winless run to seven matches and eight across all competitions, despite a first half that offered signs of what the Roots are capable of when their press and transition play are working.

It was also another tightly contested installment of a rivalry that has become increasingly familiar. The August meeting was the clubs’ third encounter of 2026, following Oakland’s 1–0 league victory in Seaside in March and their meeting in the USL Cup in April.

For Oakland, the frustration will come from what might have been.

The chances were there.
The breakthrough finally came.
The lead did not last.

For Monterey Bay, patience turned into opportunity.

And after 90 minutes at the Coliseum, Northern California’s rivals departed exactly as they had battled for much of the night — with nothing separating them.
