Gotham Turns Early Shock Into Statement Win Over Kansas City

HARRISON, N.J. — Twenty-two seconds was all it took for Kansas City Current to stun Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Before Gotham FC had truly settled into the match, Croix Bethune slipped a perfectly weighted ball behind the back line and rookie Amelia White raced onto it, lifting her finish beyond Ann-Katrin Berger to give Kansas City a 1–0 advantage. The goal came just 22 seconds after kickoff, tying the NWSL record for the fastest goal from the opening whistle. It was White’s second goal of the season and Bethune’s league-leading ninth assist.

For a team sitting atop the league, it was about as difficult a beginning as Gotham could have imagined.

What followed, however, showed exactly why Gotham entered the night in first place.

Rather than allow the early goal to dictate the match, Gotham took control of possession, pushed numbers forward and forced Kansas City deeper. In the 13th minute, Midge Purce brought the hosts level. A Jaedyn Shaw free kick caused trouble inside the area, and after the ball fell into Purce’s path, she guided a low finish into the left corner to make it 1–1.

The goal continued an impressive stretch for Purce. It was her third goal of the 2026 season, with all three arriving across her previous five appearances and all coming within the opening 15 minutes of matches. She also became only the third player in Gotham history to reach 20 regular-season goals for the club, joining Sam Kerr and Esther González.

Kansas City still had opportunities. Berger was called into action in the 20th minute, denying Haley Hopkins from close range to prevent the Current from reclaiming the lead. But as the first half progressed, Gotham’s pressure became increasingly difficult to contain.

Then came the moment that decided the night — and made a little history in the process.

In the 41st minute, Shaw found Kerr with a measured pass through the Kansas City defense. Kerr redirected the ball past goalkeeper Marisa Jordan, completing Gotham’s first-half turnaround and sending the hosts into the break ahead 2–1.

The finish was far more significant than simply a match-winner.

It was Kerr’s 80th career NWSL regular-season goal, making her the first player in league history to reach the mark. Her 31st regular-season goal for Gotham also moved her alone to the top of the club’s all-time scoring list.

Kansas City pushed for an equalizer after halftime, but Gotham continued to create the greater volume of chances. The hosts finished the evening with a commanding 16–5 advantage in shots, including 10–3 in shots on target, while producing 2.72 expected goals. Jordan’s career-high eight saves helped keep Kansas City within one.

Gotham nearly added a third when Jaelin Howell found the net in the second half, but the goal was disallowed after officials determined Kerr was offside and involved in the play. Still, Gotham’s advantage survived every late push from the Current.

At full time, the scoreboard read Gotham FC 2, Kansas City Current 1, completing a comeback that carried significance well beyond three points.

The victory extended Gotham’s unbeaten run to eight matches, improved the club to 13-3-4 with 43 points, and marked its first regular-season victory over Kansas City in club history. Gotham also moved seven points clear of second-place Washington at the conclusion of the match.

It was another display of a trait that has increasingly defined Gotham’s season: resilience. The club has now won three consecutive NWSL matches in which it conceded first — a striking turnaround for a side that had won only two of its previous 26 league matches after allowing the opening goal.

Kansas City produced the night's first statement in only 22 seconds.

Gotham spent the remaining 89 minutes answering it.
