Oakland controlled the night, but Pittsburgh controlled the scoreboard
OAKLAND, Calif. — The ball spent most of Saturday night at Oakland’s feet. The result still belonged to Pittsburgh.
Oakland Roots SC dictated long stretches of the match at the Oakland Coliseum, patiently moving possession and searching for a way through a disciplined Riverhounds defense. But while the Roots controlled the rhythm, Pittsburgh found the one moment that ultimately decided everything.

The Roots began with confidence, circulating the ball through the midfield and pushing numbers forward. Their movement suggested that an opening would eventually appear, but Pittsburgh refused to be pulled apart. The Riverhounds stayed compact, protected the middle of the field and waited for Oakland to make a mistake.
Then, in the 20th minute, the visitors struck.
A dangerous ball into the penalty area was kept alive, and Eliot Goldthorp reacted quickest, finishing from close range to give Pittsburgh the lead. It was sudden, efficient and unforgiving. Oakland had spent the opening stages shaping the match, but Pittsburgh needed only one opportunity to change it.

From that point forward, the game became a chase.
Oakland continued to hold possession, but the Riverhounds appeared comfortable defending without the ball. The Roots worked down the wings, delivered passes into the area and attempted to create space between Pittsburgh’s defenders. Each promising attack, however, seemed to disappear just before the final touch.
The second half brought more urgency. Oakland pressed higher and committed more players forward, knowing one clean chance could erase everything that had happened before it. The Coliseum waited for the equalizer. Pittsburgh never allowed it to arrive.
The Riverhounds defended every cross, crowded every shooting lane and slowed the match whenever Oakland began building momentum. Their advantage was narrow, but their control without possession made it feel increasingly secure.
For the Roots, the frustration was not that they were overwhelmed. It was that they were never able to transform their control into a goal.
When the final whistle sounded, Oakland had spent the evening asking questions. Pittsburgh had provided the only answer that counted.
