Before the Night Could Breathe, Gotham Struck
SAN JOSE, Calif. — PayPal Park was still settling into the night when Gotham FC changed the entire rhythm of the match.
As the game entered its third minute, Jaelin Howell rose inside the penalty area and redirected an early corner toward Midge Purce. Surrounded by defenders and given only a small opening, Purce calmly guided a left-footed finish through traffic and across the line.
Before Bay FC could establish itself, Gotham already held a 1–0 advantage.

But Bay FC refused to let the early goal define the evening.
Only minutes later, Cristiana Girelli lifted a header across the penalty area and into the path of Kennedy Fuller. Fuller met the ball near the goalmouth and turned it home, sending the PayPal Park crowd into celebration.
For a moment, the match appeared level. Gotham’s dream start had seemingly been erased.
Then came the wait.
The referee stood with a hand to her ear as the celebration slowly dissolved into confusion. Following a lengthy VAR review, Fuller’s equalizer was ruled offside.
The goal disappeared from the scoreboard, but not from the match. Bay FC had shown that Gotham could be opened, and the hosts continued searching for another way through.

Gotham carried the sharper attack throughout the night, but Jordan Silkowitz made sure one early goal would not become two.
The Bay FC goalkeeper repeatedly stretched, dropped and launched herself across the goalmouth, finishing with nine saves. Each stop preserved the possibility of a comeback and kept the crowd believing that one Bay FC opportunity could change everything.
Gotham could see the finish line, but Silkowitz refused to let the visitors walk comfortably toward it.

The night’s loudest moment arrived late in the second half.
Abby Dahlkemper stepped onto the field for her first NWSL appearance since June 2025 following her return from maternity leave. The supporters inside PayPal Park rose to welcome her back, briefly transforming a tense one-goal contest into something larger than the result.

Bay FC continued pushing as the final minutes disappeared.
A dangerous cross forced Gotham goalkeeper Shelby Hogan away from her line, leaving the goal temporarily exposed. Bay FC directed the loose ball back toward the net, but Gotham’s recovering defense arrived just in time to clear the danger.
It was the kind of opportunity Bay FC had chased all night—close enough to create hope, but gone before the hosts could fully grab it.

The final whistle confirmed a 1–0 Gotham victory, but the scoreline told only part of the story.
Gotham landed the first punch and protected it for nearly the entire match. Bay FC answered with resilience, a disallowed equalizer, nine saves and one final push that came within inches of changing the night.
In the end, the match was decided almost as soon as it began.
Gotham needed one opening.
Bay FC spent the rest of the night trying to take it back.
