Bay FC Secures Late 1–0 Victory Over Houston Dash
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Bay FC delivered a dramatic finish at PayPal Park on Sunday, August 23, defeating the Houston Dash 1–0 behind an 89th-minute winner from Cristiana Girelli. After nearly 90 minutes of scoreless action, the Italian forward capitalized on a late set-piece opportunity to secure all three points in front of 12,548 supporters. The victory also snapped Bay FC’s winless run and marked the club’s sixth clean sheet of the 2026 NWSL season.
The afternoon developed into a goalkeeping battle almost immediately. Bay FC produced one of its first major opportunities in the 12th minute when Karlie Lema took advantage of a Houston defensive mistake and found herself one-on-one with goalkeeper Jane Campbell, but Campbell reacted quickly to deny the attempt. Houston responded with pressure of its own, repeatedly testing Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz throughout the opening half.

Houston continued to threaten as the first half progressed. Kiki Van Zanten and Kate Faasse were among the Dash players who forced Silkowitz into action, but Bay FC’s goalkeeper repeatedly kept the visitors off the scoreboard. Neither side managed to find a breakthrough before halftime, sending the teams into the locker room tied at 0–0.
The pressure continued after the restart. Houston generated several dangerous opportunities, including an effort around the 50-minute mark that appeared headed toward goal before Silkowitz managed to reach it with an outstretched hand. She followed that stop with another impressive save from the resulting corner and had already recorded eight saves before the hour mark.

Bay FC made an important attacking change in the 62nd minute, introducing Girelli for Alex Pfeiffer. The hosts later brought on Keira Barry and Caroline Conti in the 75th minute as they continued searching for a way through Houston’s defense. At the other end, Houston remained dangerous enough that Silkowitz was forced to make 10 saves in total, playing a major role in keeping Bay FC alive as the match entered its final stages.
With the score still level late in the second half, the match appeared increasingly likely to end without a goal. Houston had created opportunities throughout the afternoon, while Campbell and the Dash defense continued to withstand Bay FC’s pressure. The two goalkeepers combined for 16 saves, highlighting how difficult it had been for either attack to finally break through.

Then, in the 89th minute, Bay FC finally found its decisive moment. Barry stepped up for a late free kick and sent an effort toward goal that came back off the woodwork. The rebound fell into the path of Girelli, who reacted quickly and finished the loose ball to give Bay FC a 1–0 lead just before stoppage time.
The goal carried additional significance for Girelli, marking the decorated Italian striker’s first NWSL goal. It was also Bay FC’s latest goal of the season and its latest match-winning strike since 2024.
Houston had little time to respond after conceding so late, and Bay FC remained composed through the closing minutes to preserve the clean sheet. When the final whistle sounded, the hosts had completed a 1–0 victory, rewarding a defensive performance anchored by Silkowitz and a late attacking breakthrough from Girelli.
For Bay FC, the result was about more than a single goal. After spending the afternoon trading chances with Houston and relying on several crucial saves to stay level, the club remained within striking distance until its opportunity arrived. Girelli’s finish ultimately provided the difference, turning a tense scoreless contest into an important home victory at PayPal Park.
