Dallas Stuns San Jose With Stoppage-Time Winner at PayPal Park

The Earthquakes fought back twice, but Samuel Sarver’s late winner handed San Jose a 3–2 defeat in front of a sold-out PayPal Park.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Twice, the San Jose Earthquakes found a way back.

The third time, there was no time left.

Samuel Sarver scored deep into second-half stoppage time Saturday night to lift FC Dallas past San Jose 3–2, stunning the crowd at PayPal Park after the Earthquakes had erased two separate deficits.

Dallas put San Jose under pressure almost immediately. Patrickson Delgado opened the scoring in the first minute, forcing the Earthquakes to chase the game virtually from the opening whistle.

San Jose eventually found its response through Beau Leroux.

Leroux pulled the Earthquakes level in the 40th minute, sending the teams toward halftime at 1–1 and giving San Jose a chance to reset after Dallas’ early breakthrough.

But the tie didn’t last long.

Petar Musa restored Dallas’ advantage four minutes into the second half, putting the visitors ahead 2–1 and once again leaving San Jose searching for an answer.

For more than half an hour, that score held.

Then Reid Roberts delivered.

In the 81st minute, Roberts found the equalizer San Jose had been chasing, scoring the first MLS goal of his career and bringing PayPal Park back to life.

At 2–2, the Earthquakes appeared to have rescued a point from a night in which they had twice fallen behind.

Instead, Dallas found one final opening.

Sarver struck in stoppage time to put the visitors ahead for a third time. This time, San Jose had no opportunity to respond.

The 3–2 loss was particularly frustrating for an Earthquakes side that had spent much of the night pushing forward. San Jose finished with more possession and held a narrow advantage in total shots, but Dallas made its final opportunity count.

The night also carried significance beyond the result.

Earthquakes legend Chris Wondolowski was honored at halftime following his induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame earlier in the month. The MLS all-time regular-season scoring leader received the recognition in front of a sold-out crowd of 18,000.

By the final whistle, though, the celebration had given way to frustration.

San Jose had answered Dallas twice.

One final goal made sure it wouldn’t get the chance to do it a third time.
